Lençóis Maranhenses

The breathtaking dunes are the highlight of this national park of 1550 km². Wandering dunes extend up to 40 km inland. Thus, despite the relatively high rainfall (about 1500 mm), we find here the only desert of Brazil. The temperature varies between 16° celsius and 36° celsius. The wind is often strong. The water level of the lagoons in the national park changes; After a long dry period, several lagoons are sometimes completely dehydrated.

Day 1: Transfer São Luis to Barreirinhas or straight to Atins

Departure to Barreirinhas, the main entrance to Lençois Maranhenses National Park (travel time approx. 4 hours). It is also recommended to travel directly to Atins and enjoy this special, still largely undiscovered place as a starting point for excursions!

Excursion to the Blue Lagune “Lagoa azul”

Short drive to the Pousada and continue (about 15 km) in a pick-up. The journey takes you on an adventurous sandy track between the cashew nuts and the park. Once there, you cross the dunes, which spread before you. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the freshwater pools and enjoy a spectacular sunset in the dunes before returning to Barreirinhas.

Day 2: Speed boat excursion on the Preguiças river to Vassouras – Mandacuru and Caburé

Take a fast boat and head north along the Rio Preguicas River. In the small village of Vassouras you will see the end of the dunes of the little Lançois Maranhenses and the magnificent mangroves. Another attraction of Vassouras is the monkeys. Continue towards Mandacaru. From the lighthouse, you have a magnificent panoramic view of the Rio Preguiças, the national park Lençois and the beach of Caburé. If you wish, you can have a cool drink with coconut. Several rooms and restaurants offer a lunch (not included).
Back to Barrerinhas.

Day 3: Atins and Tutoia

Today, you will go to Canto de Atins, where you will cross the dunes (about 1.5 hours). You will be rewarded with the fantastic green lagoon. Here you can take a well-deserved and refreshing bath. Several rooms and restaurants offer a lunch (not included). In this remote area, apparently at the end of the world, you can finish the afternoon quietly.

Day 4: Transfer to São Luis Airport or Hotel in São Luis or extension to the national parks of Parnaiba Delta and Jericoacoara
